Case study: Sophisticated Scandi-inspired master bathroom
This stunning bathroom design embraces a refined, modern aesthetic but with a touch of warmth.
The brief
For this project, the client's brief was to create a space that balanced contemporary style with natural elements, creating a calm Scandi-inspired retreat from the outside world. The client was keen to create a timeless space which would look great for many years to come so high-quality materials, earthy textures and subtle tones were at the top of the wishlist.
“Sage, often associated with nature, brings a fresh, airy feeling to the space, while the neutral tones in the stone-textured tiles add depth without being overwhelming.”
-Dena, Senior Designer
Layout
As this bathroom project was part of wider renovations of a detached family home in Stevenage, the existing bathroom hadn’t been updated in many years and was in need of a complete re-design. When it came to the layout, our designer decided to create focal areas near the two windows, to create an open, airy feel and to allow as much natural daylight as possible to highlight the space's beautiful textures. Due to the generous footprint of the room, Dena was able to zone the space and create separate areas for the bath, the shower, the vanity unit and the WC. This layout maintained ample floor space, making the bathroom feel expansive while offering a seamless flow between the different areas.
The vanity area
For the vanity area, Dena selected a sleek, double-basin unit in a soft sage green with minimalist, modern brassware. This colour choice brings a hint of nature into the room, connecting with the organic textures and materials used throughout. This was further enhanced by the introduction of slatted wooden panelling behind the vanity which offers a natural-looking, textural alternative to tiles. The wood’s rich tone and texture make this area a real focal point, drawing the eye and adding depth to the design. Decorative and task lighting were then incorporated through the addition of the modern pendant lights and stylish arched LED mirrors.
The bath and shower
To further enhance the spa-like feel of this room, the client opted for a striking freestanding bath with a generous bathing area. The tiles behind the bath almost curve around it, creating a cosy and cocooning atmosphere, whilst the sleek, wall-mounted bath mixer keeps the area looking minimalist and pared-back. Sitting adjacent to the bath is the luxurious walk-in shower where Dena used the same wood panelling from behind the vanity unit to create an inviting entrance to the shower area. The warm tone and natural texture are reminiscent of a Scandi sauna and the fluted shower screen mirrors the vertical lines found in the wood.
The colour palette
The nature-inspired colour palette is fundamental to the bathroom’s calming ambiance. The sage green of the vanity adds warmth and interest while remaining soft and subtle whilst the rich brown wood brings plenty of warmth. The large format tiles in a light stone pattern cover the walls and floor, providing an earthy, natural texture that gives the bathroom a spa-like feel and grounds the scheme perfectly.
