Case study: Cosy farmhouse bathroom with terracotta floor
Blending traditional and modern aesthetics is no small feat, but this recent client project masterfully achieves this balance.
The layout
These homeowners recently moved to this stunning Georgian farmhouse in an idyllic country village near Oxford. Looking to modernise the existing space and add their own style, they enlisted the help of Leanne to re-design the master ensuite and create distinct spaces for a bath, vanity unit and shower.
The bath
Keen to make the most of the existing footprint, Leanne reconfigured the room to incorporate a statement freestanding bathtub. The clients opted for a traditional rolltop design but added a twist by having it hand-painted in Farrow & Ball’s ‘Cornforth White’. The bath was strategically placed under the window, allowing natural light to flood the space while providing a relaxing view of the outdoors. The bath’s classic design has been enhanced with modern fixtures, including a sleek wall-mounted bath mixer in a polished chrome finish.
The shower
Tucked away opposite the bath is the walk-in shower. Simply-designed with a polished chrome rainfall showerhead and matching handshower, this area is finished with a white steel shower tray which is a practical choice but also helps to zone the space. The shower walls are adorned with square zellige-style tiles, matching those used by the bath, helping to create a cohesive design. These tiles provide a subtle backdrop that enhances the room's brightness while adding a layer of sophistication. Their glossy finish reflects light, further amplifying the sense of space.
“Parquet flooring is having a huge moment right now. The terracotta tiles add another layer of interest to the space and have a lovely textured feel.”
-Leanne, Senior Designer
The vanity area
The vanity unit, painted in a Farrow & Ball’s ‘Pigeon’, adds a pop of colour without overwhelming the serene palette. Its shaker-style doors and simple polished chrome taps maintain a traditional feel, while the integrated basin and modern fixtures ensure practicality and plenty of storage. The large round mirror above the vanity not only serves a functional purpose but also contributes to the room’s spacious and open feel, bouncing light from the large farmhouse windows.
Finishing touches
The herringbone brick flooring adds a rustic touch to the bathroom, grounding the space with its warm, earthy tones. This choice of flooring not only adds visual interest but also brings a tactile element that complements the overall aesthetic. The bricks’ natural texture and colour variations create a cosy, inviting feel.
