Case study: Children’s ensuite with a trio tiles

This sweet ensuite plays with pattern and texture to create a stylish yet functional space perfectly suited to the homeowner’s daughter.

Senior Designer Leanne from Ripples Newbury used a trio of tiles and a pretty pastel palette for this captivating children’s ensuite

The layout

The layout of a bathroom plays a pivotal role in its overall functionality and comfort. In this design, the space has been thoughtfully arranged to maximise both efficiency and relaxation. As the main user of this bathroom will be the homeowners daughter, they were keen to make sure it would function as well for her now as it will in the future and the shower-over-bath layout achieves this perfectly. The room is anchored by a large window that floods the space with natural light, enhancing the open and airy feel. This window, coupled with the strategic placement of fixtures and furniture, ensures an inviting atmosphere. The bathroom is effectively divided into distinct zones: the bath/shower area, the vanity area and the WC area. This zoning is achieved through the clever use of tiling which helps delineate each area without making the space feel disconnected.

The shower-over-bath

A seamless flow has been created in the room by placing the steel bath centrally against the wall. This is the perfect practical solution for bath time but also offers the opportunity for a full shower experience when the homeowner’s daughter is a little older. The cleverly-designed double-hinged shower glass folds back to sit flush against the wall, providing plenty of space to get in and out the bath safely but offering a practical option for stopping water splashes when the shower is used. To finish off the area, Leanne incorporated a full-width in-built storage niche, providing ample space for shower products, helping to reduce clutter around the bath edge. A polished chrome showerhead and matching controls gives a timeless finish and matches the brassware used within the other bathrooms in the home.

The vanity

The painted Shaker-style vanity unit was painted in Farrow & Ball’s Ammonite, providing the perfect off-white shade to complement the rest of the room. Its practical design features two deep drawers, ideal for stowing away bathroom products and towels. The vanity is finished with an in-built basin and sleek and contemporary polished chrome tap. Completing the vanity area is a framed circular mirror with in-build LED lighting, adding a subtle glow to the already well-lit room.

“Terracotta tiles are the perfect choice for the floor; not only are they super stylish, they also have great slip-resistance.

Finishing touches

The use of white Zellige-style tiles on the walls provides a clean and timeless backdrop which contrast beautifully with the geometric pattern of the teal wall tiles. The warm, earthy tones of the terracotta hexagonal tiles on the floor ground the room, adding a cosy, rustic charm which suits the aesthetic of this farmhouse perfectly.
