Case study: A stylish space with chequerboard floor and charming accessories

This pretty pink bathroom features an ecclectic mix of colours, patterns and textures.

Kerri, Senior Designer at Ripples Winchester, created a playful scheme with plenty of character.

The brief

The owners of this Edwardian terrace in the heart of Winchester wanted to transform their tired bathroom into a traditional space but with a modern twist. As a young family with a new baby, the homeowners were keen to create a practical room, without compromising on style or that ‘wow’ factor.

Beautiful bath

The first part of the room to come together was the bath area. Kerri specified a feature painted rolltop to take centre stage in the room, ensuring it’s the first thing you see when you open the door. The clients are colour lovers so they opted to have the bath painted in a deep forest green, to create a strong contrast with the pastel pink paint they’d picked for the walls. Brushed brass brassware finishes this area perfectly as it pops against the darker shade of the bath. By incorporating crosshead bath taps, Kerri was able to give a subtle nod to the heritage of the property but in a refreshingly modern way.

Creating a separate shower

Whilst space was tight, Kerri was still able to incorporate a surprisingly spacious walk-in shower within the room. A flipper shower panel was chosen as it can be folded back on itself when not in use and helps contain any water overspray. A bold gloss metro tile was chosen in a rich shade of green to tie together the colour of the bath and furniture to create a more cohesive scheme.

“My favourite part of this room is the basin area - we took time ensuring this was centralised to the chimeny breast and the decorative mirror and wall lights finish the space off beautifully.”

The vanity area

The client loves the look of Shaker style furniture so Kerri chose a Shaker style vanity unit and colour-matched it to the bath. A porcelain basin was chosen as it’s incredibly hard-wearing so will stand the test of time in a busy family bathroom. PVD taps were also picked as they’re the most durable brassware finish on the market and will continue looking beautiful for many years to come.

Finishing touches

Perhaps the most striking aspect of the room is the chequerboard floor. Its bold diamond layout makes a real statement whilst its monochrome colourway helps to balance out the other colourful aspects of the room. A more subtle matt white metro tile was used behind the basin and bath, tying together the elements of all the other tiles used, without detracting from them.
