Gallery: Victorian-inspired bathroom with painted rolltop and bespoke vanity unit
The owners of this bathroom in Surrey wanted to create a scheme which was sympathetic to the Victorian era of their home but with all the latest fixtures and fittings. As a professional family with young children, the space needed to suit their busy lifestyles and work practically for all members of the family.
The brief was to create a new family bathroom to replace the existing suite which made poor use of the space and looked tired and dated. The homeowners were keen to to embrace their favourite colour combination of navy, white and brass and perfectly strike the balance between classic and contemporary. The challenge was to therefore re-configure the room to make the most of its generous size, whilst creating an aesthetic in-keeping with the rest of the Victorian home.
As the client’s had a clear vision of what they were hoping to achieve in the space, the design came together quickly. Due to the large footprint of the room, there was plenty of space for a substantial walk-in shower as well as a freestanding rolltop bath which gives a nod to the Victorian heritage of the home. A built-in shelf above the bath offers a handy space to store bathroom products and display plants whilst the metro tiles provide plenty of protection against water splashes.
On the opposite side of the room, the metro tiles from behind the bath have been replicated, offering both a practical solution and a pleasing symmetrical design. The focal point of this area is the huge 1600mm vanity unit which is painted in the client’s favourite colour, Farrow & Ball’s Stiffkey Blue, again creating symmetry within the space. The unit is topped with a beautiful bespoke marble surface with matching built-in basins and provides ample storage for all the family’s bathroom belongings.
Another focal point of the room is the brassware. A brushed brass finish has been used throughout the space, offering a striking contrast to stark white walls and rich blue furniture and floors. Details such as the crosshead tap handles and industrial towel rail add to the Victorian feel which is further enhanced by the use of Victorian-inspired floor tiles.
