Case study: Timeless bathroom with painted furniture, panelling and luxe lighting

This spacious bathroom offers plenty of room for relaxation and retreat.

Working with a large space, Caroline, Designer at Ripples Winchester, created a warm and welcoming master bathroom for her clients with plenty of timeless features.

The aesthetic

Having recently moved from their home near Gatwick to a townhouse in Winchester, the owners of this bathroom were keen to create a soft and serene space to indulge in pure relaxation. They wanted the room to be an extension of the rest of their home, and feel more like a living area than a simple functional bathroom. With this in mind, they were open to exploring options for colour, texture and lighting, and worked with designer Caroline to help achieve this.

The layout

Working with a generously proportioned space, Caroline was able to create distinct areas for getting ready and for relaxation. A luxurious rolltop bath was at the top of the client’s wishlist so Caroline was careful to ensure it stood out as a feature within the room. By building out a partition wall (more on that later) Caroline was able to create a cosy nook to house the rolltop, offering a sense of privacy. Caroline finished the area with an LED-lit storage niche for storing bathroom products and decorative pendants which add a sense of decadence and atmosphere when turned on.

Opposite the bath, Caroline incorporated a perfectly colour-matched vanity unit, creating a gentle symmetry with the colour palette within the space. With four deep drawers, the vanity provides plenty of storage space which is perfect for hiding away bathroom products and stowing towels. The splashback behind the taps introduces an initial glimpse of marble into the design, with the veining tying together the colours of the furniture and floor tiles.

Spacious shower

By incorporating a partition wall within the room, Caroline was able to create a generously sized shower. The large format marble-effect tiles mirror those used behind the basin area and offer a luxurious and timeless look. They also have very few grout lines making them easy to maintain and keep clean. With a large showerhead and separate handset, Caroline was able to create a hotel-inspired shower for her clients.

Finishing touches

To keep the space clean and classic, the clients restricted the use of tiles and opted for plenty of panelling instead. The panelling helps to zone particular areas of the room, including behind the bath and WC, and the soft sage hue creates an instant feeling of serenity.

Additional mood lighting was incorporated by the mirror above the vanity unit; the side-lighting offers the perfect level of light for getting ready in the morning or winding down in the evening.
