Designer advice: Designing the ultimate sports recovery bathroom

For those who lead an active lifestyle, recovery is just as important as training. Whatever sport you’re passionate about, your bathroom can become a personal wellness retreat to help you reset and recover. Here, Neil, Senior Designer from Ripples Bath explains how to create the perfect post-workout sanctuary in your home.

Steam - for relaxation

A steam shower or dedicated steam room is one of the most effective ways to relax tired muscles and improve circulation. Steam therapy helps to reduce lactic acid build-up, alleviating post-exercise stiffness. If space allows, a built-in steam generator can transform your shower into a private spa experience, while sleek glass enclosures ensure a luxurious, modern finish. To elevate the experience, consider incorporating chromotherapy lighting, which uses different colours to enhance relaxation and energy levels.

Cold water - for reduced inflammation

Cold water immersion has been a huge trend in recent years due to its proven benefits for reducing inflammation and adding to mental wellbeing. You can develop your own cold water therapy ritual at home with a deep freestanding bath with an integrated cooling system, or even a dedicated cold plunge tub. If a full cold plunge isn’t for you, installing a shower with a cold mist setting or contrast therapy options (switching between hot and cold water) can provide similar benefits.

Shower - for sore muscles

A powerful, multi-functional shower system is a must-have for sports enthusiasts. Consider a shower setup that includes body jets positioned at different heights to target sore muscles, alongside a high-pressure rain showerhead for an immersive experience. Thermostatic controls allow for precise temperature adjustments, ensuring you can easily switch between hot and cold therapy as needed.

Hydrotherapy - for muscle stimulation

If you prefer a more traditional approach to recovery, a hydrotherapy bath with massage jets can provide targeted relief for aching muscles. Air and water jet technology can be customised to suit different recovery needs, whether you want gentle relaxation or deep muscle stimulation.

Aromatherapy - for overall wellbeing

To take your bathroom to the next level, incorporate wellness-focused design details. Built-in essential oil diffusers can infuse steam showers or baths with muscle-soothing scents like eucalyptus or peppermint whilst smart lighting controls can create a calming ambiance, helping both mind and body unwind after a training session, run or swim.
