Designer advice: Creative ways to use tiles beyond the floor

Tiles can completely transform a space, offering both functional and aesthetic possibilities beyond the traditional uses. While flooring remains the most common application, tiles are now being embraced for their versatility, durability and stunning visual impact in other areas of the bathroom. Here, Kalli, Designer from Ripples Towcester, explains how.

Elevate your splashback

The splashback is one of the most natural places to expand your tile design beyond the floor. It serves both a functional and aesthetic purpose, protecting the walls from water while creating a visually appealing focal point. Opting for tiles with a unique pattern or texture can instantly enhance your vanity area.

Consider using:

  • Mosaic tiles for a pop of color and intricate design

  • Subway tiles for a clean, classic look that never goes out of style

  • Marble tiles to add a touch of glamour and reflect light for a brighter space

For those wanting a sleek, modern finish, large format tiles in a neutral tone can create a seamless and elegant backdrop.

Make a statement with a feature wall

A feature wall offers an opportunity to truly showcase your personal style and make a bold statement. Whether behind the bath, around the shower, or even framing the vanity unit, a tiled feature wall can create a sense of drama and sophistication in any bathroom.

Some ideas include:

  • Geometric patterns that bring a contemporary flair and visual interest

  • Textured tiles, such as 3D designs, to add depth and tactile intrigue

  • Marble-effect tiles for a timeless, luxurious appeal

Feature walls can also be a great way to incorporate vibrant colours or bold prints without overwhelming the entire space, keeping the overall design balanced while allowing your personality to shine through.

Wrap the bath

Wrapping a bathtub in coordinating or contrasting tiles can tie the bathroom together in a cohesive, design-forward way. By using tiles around the base of a freestanding bath or building a tiled surround, you create a custom look that exudes luxury. This technique also provides an opportunity to mix materials, such as pairing smooth stone tiles with matte porcelain tiles for a rich, layered effect.

Additionally, extending the tile from the floor to the bath creates a continuous flow that can make a smaller bathroom feel more spacious and harmonious.

Add a touch of luxury to the ceiling

Though often overlooked, tiling the ceiling can create a cocooning effect that adds a touch of drama and luxury to your bathroom. For wet areas like the shower, tiling the ceiling is not only stylish but also functional, offering better moisture resistance and easier cleaning.

If you're feeling bold, consider using high-gloss tiles to reflect light and enhance the sense of height in the room. For a more subtle look, neutral or marble-patterned tiles can complement your walls and floors for an all-encompassing, spa-like experience.

 Create artful niches and shelves

Niches and built-in shelves are practical elements in a bathroom, especially in the shower or above the bath. But why stop at practical? By lining these areas with complementary or contrasting tiles, you can turn them into mini works of art. Use a mosaic or colorful tile to define the space, offering a subtle yet impactful design detail.

This approach is perfect for adding texture or accenting the room’s overall palette without overwhelming the design.

 Incorporate decorative borders or insets

If you want to experiment with tile but aren’t ready for a full feature wall or backsplash, try adding decorative tile borders or insets. A band of decorative tiles can be used to break up larger sections of plain tiles, framing mirrors, or outlining vanity areas. You can also use a different pattern or material to create a tiled "rug" on the wall or floor for an added touch of luxury.

Think of this technique as adding jewelry to your bathroom—it’s all about small, thoughtful details that bring a space to life.

When it comes to bathroom design, tiles are more than just a functional material—they’re an opportunity for artistic expression. From backsplashes and feature walls to ceilings and decorative accents, using tiles in creative ways can turn your bathroom into a luxurious sanctuary.
